Ah. This is a tough rate. So much good. A little bad. And a big ugly. I have been by this place numerous times over the years. I even stopped for a drink with friends many years ago, however, never had the pleasure of grabbing some grub. Today, my two young daughters and I stopped to grab a bite. It was 2:20 pm. Aside from a couple diners and a small group at the bar it was empty. THE GOOD The place has a magnificent view of the Mississippi River and a very over-the-top rustic atmosphere, but in a good way. We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door by the bartender who informed us to sit anywhere we like. Shortly thereafter we were given menus and ordered drinks which arrived promptly. The menu is filled with specialty pizzas and specialty burgers and everything in between. Here is where I will jump ahead. When we received our food it was very good. First we received the mozzarella sticks. These ARE HOMEMADE. Not the frozen garbage you get everywhere else. Hands down the best I have ever had. . . ever. They were freakishly huge and came with a homemade marinara which was pretty good. When my oldest daughter received her fettuccine alfredo we were flabbergasted! It was a ridiculously huge portion served with homemade alfredo and garlic bread. The sauce, again, pretty good. The garlic bread was awesome. She opted for a side of coleslaw with her meal which was pretty basic. My youngest daughter and I had ordered a medium pizza with pepperoni, green olives, and mushrooms. When the pizza came I thought they had mistakenly made us a large. It was one of the largest pizzas I'd ever seen. And once again, the sauce was pretty good. Overall, a pretty tasty pizza. THE BAD Over the course of our stay we were waited on by three different people. One took our order, gave us drinks, brought some of our food, refilled some of our drinks, and finally received payment. One refilled some of our drinks and brought some of the food. And yet another brought food and the bill. Another bad thing, some may consider this good, our pizza looked like they got rid of all the green olives and mushrooms they had. Seriously, I have never bought a jar of olives big enough to amount what was on this pizza. Sometimes, less is more. THE UGLY After promptly receiving menus and drinks we were asked if we'd like a minute to look through the menu. To which I politely responded, "yes, please" . It took a good 20 minutes before our order was taken. I must remind you, there were not many people here at this time. Once we ordered, our mozzarella sticks came in what I'd say a "normal" amount of time. They were followed by the fettuccine, again at what I'd say a "normal" amount of time. Then we waited. . . . . . . About 20 minutes later my daughter received her coleslaw. She was already full from her fettuccine. So while waiting an additional 35 minutes for our pizza my youngest and I shared the coleslaw. We walked in at about 2:20 pm and walked out at about 4:10 pm Considering it was pretty empty, there were only three of us, and they appeared to be more than adequately staffed I was very disappointed with the service. Very disappointed. Honestly, this place deserves at least four if not five stars. But nearly 2 hrs for three people when it's dead? C'mon man!

I was very excited to try this place. Diane, her daughter and friends all rave about the pizza here. On the night we went there were several problems that account for a low rating. First, our order of Spinach/Artichoke Dip had separated and was one big ball of melted cheese, spinach and artichokes swimming in oil. The second problem had to do with our pizzas. As I excitedly bit into The Road House Special (Cheese, Homemade Sausage, Mushroom, Onion) I thought it was really bland, like they just used hamburger instead of homemade sausage like I was told. I initially figured I was just being a foodie snob, until the regulars I was with said the same thing. I actually liked the Shrimp Pizza better than they did. On the plus side, The Mozzarella Sticks were right up with the best I've ever had. Service was ok and they are wheelchair accessible.

This place is so much more than just pizza. Located on the scenic Great River Road (route 35, along the Mississippi River), it is -the- place to stop for a beer, burger, huge shrimp, steak, catfish, etc. It is always packed with passers-by, be it bikers on a road trip or locals. Evenings are busy, around lunch time it's busy - they don't do breakfast as far as i know. But with the quality of the staff, the nice ambience, i'm sure it will be a hit too ;-) Try the garlic mashed potatoes, the shrimp and the catfish. coleslaw is awesome as well. They got a nice range of beers (bottle / can); and Spotted Cow is on tap, so is Blue Moon (not my favorite...) Portions are huge, and the Pizzas i saw moving by are loaded with your toppings of choice! Worthy of a detour!

I live on the West Coast and visit family in Wisconsin. On every visit, I make sure we make at least one trip to the Great River Roadhouse. Delicious food, great service, friendly staff!

Over 10 years of family memories here. Being from the Chicago area, we have high standards for pizza. They deliver time and time again. The staff is great, atmosphere is great. Drink selection is great.

Great ribs! More food than any human should eat! But I'm not just any human! Nicely priced meals. Easy to share. Decent large sandwiches too. Pizzas seem to be the specialty & look great, but have yet to try one. Eat in. Full bar with a very lengthy beer selection (bottles).

Arrived at 5:30 on a Saturday evening. Took 30 minutes to get a high top in the bar (table was longer). Immediately ordered some onion rings and a pizza. Onion rings arrived in about 30 minutes; the pizza took an hour and 22 minutes to show up. We ordered the spicy Sicilian. Somehow we missed the meaning of "sweet chili sauce" at the end of the description. The pizza was so sweet it was almost inedible. Plus I think the "crust" was pre-made or bought. All the other pizzas looked very good so maybe this is one to avoid. The onion rings were very good. Avoid on busy days, they cannot handle the crowds. Oh, and call in orders seem to be prioritized over in-house diners.

Loves that place! Such a fun holiday decor and quirky waitress. My friends shared the pizza which was huge and delicious. I had the fish sandwich which was very good as well (although the waitress forgot to bring the tartar sauce with it). But great experience overall is a very cosy atmosphere and overlooking the beautiful river.

Saturday 9/5/15 this place has always been great but this time --- horrible. After waiting 40 minutes to be seated we ordered their always awesome pizza - it took exactly 1hr12mins (according to our server) to arrive on our table. First bad experience here but will probably avoid summer Saturday's from now on.

The waitress was super nice, the food was delicious and my family enjoyed it. We came down from La Crosse because we'd heard the pizza was great. Well worth the drive and we'll be back! The thin crust is amazing!

You wait awhile for the food, but it's usually worth the wait. The pizza is known for miles around. Liberal with the toppings, and thin crust is light and crisp. Pub atmosphere with bar and mixed drinks, but frequented by families. The antler chandeliers with crazy wall decor gives it the Wisconsin river tavern look, but fun and festive.

I live in DeSoto and my Dad and I were on our way back from errands in La Crosse, so we stopped for some dinner. First thing I noticed was the view, the Mississippi is right there and at sunset it was pretty spectacular. I'm watching portion sizes as part of my diet, so I opted for the Chicken Tenders and some fries, since their burgers are 1/3 lb and the only steak on the menu is very large. The chicken was fantastic. Nice and warm, crunchy outside with firm but chewable inside, perfect with the ranch on the side. Fries were superb as well, fresh and hot, good flavor without tasting like potato and oil, wonderful with a little ketchup. I had lemonade with my meal, (I've cut out soda), and it comes bottled and the waitress kindly pored it into a glass with ice for me. It was a really good blend of sweet and tangy, I had 3 glasses actually haha! TV's were spaced out and were playing different Olympic events. Staff was super nice. I can't drink obviously but from what I saw the bar has plenty to offer. Will definitely be a regular customer now, and if you're ever in the area, make a detour for an awesome meal with an awesome view of the river!

If you ever happen to at the same time (a) be in DeSoto, Wisconsin (population 508), (b) sitting atop a hill on the deck of a cabin looking out over the Mississippi River, and (c) craving all-u-can-eat Friday fish fry, the Great River Roadhouse will not let you down. You have a choice between cod and perch (I recommend the cod). Like many-a-fry, the cod is lightly battered and deep fried to a crispy-outside and flaky-inside yum. And, it's guaranteed to bring you Four Happiness! Pizza seems to be a local favorite at The Roadhouse. Many were chowing on it. Clarissa J. and I didn't try the 'za because, well, being from Chicago....why? However, I admit It did look good, especially for western WI. DeSoto is located on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River, about 2 1/2 hours west of Madison. Very secluded and quaint. It's a great place to rent a cabin and get away from city life for a few days. And, the Roadhouse is a great place to get a tasty Friday fish fry.
